Discover the Magic of Hıdırellez: Turkey’s Mystical Spring Festival
What Is Hıdırellez?
Hıdırellez (also spelled Hıdrellez, Hidrellez) is a centuries-old spring festival celebrated on May 5–6 in Turkey and across parts of the Balkans and Anatolia.
The name itself fuses the names of two prophets: Hızır (Al-Khidr) and İlyas (Elijah). According to tradition, once a year these two divine figures meet on earth to awaken nature, bless people with healing, fertility, and abundance, and renew the balance of land and water.
In 2017, Hıdırellez was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing its deep cultural and spiritual resonance.

The Spiritual Heartbeat of Hıdırellez
While different communities mark the festival in distinct ways, many of the rituals point to a shared, symbolic relationship between humans, nature, and the unseen world. Here are some enduring spiritual motifs:
Nature’s Renewal: Hıdırellez marks the “awakening” of spring, when trees leaf out, rivers flow, and life regenerates. The event is deeply linked to the cycle of death → rebirth.
Blessings & Healing: Hızır is often viewed as a healer or guardian spirit who walks the earth on this night, visiting homes and granting benevolence to sincere hearts.
Intention & Manifestation: Many people write wishes or prayers on paper (or craft symbolic models of what they desire) and leave them under rose bushes, near springs, or in gardens, trusting that in this liminal time their prayers may be heard.
Purification & Renewal Rites: Typical practices include jumping over fires (to cleanse negative energy), walking barefoot on grass, ritual baths in sacred water, and offerings to nature.
Sacred Time & Thresholds: The festival is viewed as a “thin time” — a moment when the boundaries between the human and spiritual realms are more permeable, making prayers and intentions more potent.
Through these rituals, participants don’t just observe a festival — they co-create a sacred moment in which the visible world and invisible blessings align.
