What Is Hıdırellez?

Hıdırellez (also spelled Hıdrellez, Hidrellez) is a centuries-old spring festival celebrated on May 5–6 in Turkey and across parts of the Balkans and Anatolia. 

The name itself fuses the names of two prophets: Hızır (Al-Khidr) and İlyas (Elijah). According to tradition, once a year these two divine figures meet on earth to awaken nature, bless people with healing, fertility, and abundance, and renew the balance of land and water. 

In 2017, Hıdırellez was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing its deep cultural and spiritual resonance.
